Access to a full range of electronic services is available via 9 PCs in the IT suite (The Wolfson Room) on the ground floor of the Horner Markwick library. These give access to the University’s Managed Cluster Service for those holding Desktop Services accounts. There is also a smaller IT room on the ground floor of the Horner Markwick library. This houses a Managed Cluster Service PC.
Resident members of Newnham College can work at any desk in the library (except our visitors’ reading table near the main staff office, which should be kept free for visitors during staff hours). The ground floor of the Yates Thompson library is a computer free zone. In all other places, you can plug in your PC. If you lift up the desk flaps, you’ll see how to switch on task lights, and plug in your laptop. Please take care not to trap the flex in the lid when you close it (trail the flex through the brushy bit). There is wi-fi access throughout the library, and desks in the Horner Markwick library have wired network connections too. Please follow these intructions to connect your laptop to the network:
If you experience any problems, email the computer officers at helpdesk@newn.cam.ac.uk or visit the IT department (located next to the Porter's Lodge).
A multi-function copier/printer/scanner is housed within the library. You need your University card to operate it. Users are reminded of the restrictions on photocopying under the Copyright Licence Agreement, details of which are posted in the Print Room.
The Group Study Room has 8 desks with PCs connected to the University's Managed Cluster Service, headphone sets (if required), and a multimedia projector to assist with the presentation and discussion of electronic resources.
Alternatively, the room can be prepared for groups working on printed materials together - the PC screens and keyboards can be folded away by library staff.
The room seats up to 10 people and can be reserved for use during staff hours by arrangement with library staff. Library users are asked to be quiet in all other parts of the library, so if you wish to use and discuss library materials and/or electronic resources with others, please ask about booking the Group Study Room. The room can only be booked by Newnham College Library registered users, who should be in attendance during their booked session. However, a group may include people who are not registered library users so long as they are signed in and out as library visitors during staff hours and agree to abide by library rules.
Please ask library staff or email the librarian if you would like to book the Group Study Room.
There is only one main entrance and exit to the library. All other doors are for emergency use only, and alarmed. They will release automatically in the event of the fire alarm sounding, except for the Yates Thompson fire exit door, which has a Break Glass For Key next to it.
If you hear the continuous fire alarm, please leave the library immediately by the nearest exit and make your way to the Fawcett car park assembly point. Please familiarise yourself with all fire exits and evacuation procedures. If you hear the pulsating fire alarm this means that the fire alarm has been activated in one of the buildings adjoining ours. You do not have to evacuate, but must not move to any adjacent building while the alarm is sounding.
If you find that you need to use the lift, press the button marked '0' for Ground Floor, '1' for First Floor, and '-1' for Basement. In the unlikely event of the lift getting stuck, there is an alarm button (the button with the yellow bell on it) which puts you directly through to the Kone lift people who will come and rescue you.
There is a lavatory in the library lobby. Users after staff hours should remember to take their University cards with them so that they can get back in through the inner lobby door. Disabled lavatories are available nearby in Sidgwick and towards the Buttery.
There is a strict rule of no food and drink in the library. The desks are electrically wired, and we don't want any spills. There is a fine of £5.00 for bringing in food or drink.
Please be aware of the library closing time and be ready to leave if you are in the library around that time.
Emergency phones with direct connections to the Porter's Lodge are available in the library lobby and secondary staircase.
